   For his significant contributions to the field of quantum optics, in particular the interaction of laser light with atoms; of particular note are his works on ultracold bosonic gases in optical lattices and on achieving long coherence times in quantum computers.

   for groundbreaking theoretical contributions to quantum information processing, quantum optics and the physics of quantum gases.
